A famous movies director tries to understand why his life started to change so drastically.
The action begins in 1912. The heroes of the painting - neighbors, villagers, Cossacks from the Tatarsky farm of the village of Vyoshenskaya - have lived on this land for centuries, they are connected by kinship, friendship, love, common labor and military service. But this durable and self-sufficient world with its unique way of life, habits and a special system of views and values is collapsing under the onslaught of bloody turmoil and revolution. Don is divided by hatred. The seemingly immutable age-old foundations of Don life - land, farm, family, military duty - are dissolving in the crucible of fratricidal war. The Melekhov, Korshunov, and Astakhov families are involved in the cycle of military and political events.
The film represents life in a godforsaken Russian village. The only way to reach the mainland is to cross the lake by boat and a postman became the only connection with the outside world. A reserved community has been set up here. Despite the modern technologies and a spaceport nearby the people of the village live the way they would in the Neolithic Era. There is neither government nor social services or jobs. The postman's beloved woman escapes the village life and moves to the city. Postman's outboard engine gets stolen and he can no longer deliver mail. His normal pattern of life is disrupted. The postman makes a decision to leave for the city too but returns before long with no certain reason. The script is based on real characters' stories. People from the village play their own parts in the film. The search for the protagonist lasted for over a year.
The film begins in 1985 in a military garrison, where a fighter aviation regiment is stationed. Two tenth graders - the daughter of the deputy commander of the regiment, Zhenya Lugovaya, and the son of the waitress of the flight canteen, Vanka Kotov - are covered with a feeling of first mutual love. Harsh dramatic events separate the characters, their life paths diverge, and they lose each other for many, many years. Vanka Kotov becomes a test pilot, Zhenya Lugovaya becomes a military surgeon. One day, fate brings the heroes together again...

Andrei's ex-girlfriend Tania (Anzhela Belyanskaya) has been constantly in danger of going to jail since he knew her. Their breakup was not his doing, and he is determined to keep her out of jail. Andrei (Oleg Menshikov) has a notion that, if he can raise enough money, he can smuggle her out of Russia into New York, where all will be well. While Andrei's grasp on reality may be tenuous, his ability to maneuver and scheme is unimpaired. He is a student filmmaker, and the kind of money he needs to save Tania with doesn't grow on trees. He begins raising funds by mugging men at public toilets, and graduates to stealing the drug money accumulated by more serious gangsters. After he has raised the money to accomplish his goal, his girl, the light of his life, confesses that she despises him, and then goes out and gets arrested.

The man, an actor, soon leaves for his country house where his entire family, including a gravely ill brother, is waiting.
