Alessandro D'Alatri directed this Italian drama about Jesus Christ, covering his childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood, an 18-year span not chronicled in the Bible. The film uses names of the period instead of names given in the Bible. The adult Jeoshua (Kim Rossi Stuart) reflects on past events -- his journey into the desert, baptism, acceptance into the Essenes' community, Jewish life in Galilee, his yeshiva studies, education from his father Josef (Omar Chenbod), and his spiritual growth. After seeing slavery, crucifixions, the stoning of an adulteress, and brutal Roman soldiers, Jeoshua turns to God for answers, leaves the village, and is betrayed by his friend Aziz (Said Taghmaoui), who leaves him to die in the desert. Issues such as carnality bring Jeoshua in conflict with the Essenes, yet he speaks out on behalf of the Essene David (popular Italian singer Lorenzo Cherubini).
Stefano, a philosophy grad student without a future, tries to commit suicide after his girlfriend leaves him. He is saved by Giulio, a wisecracking plumber who takes him home and teaches him the tricks of the trade. When Lucia, a woman disappointed in both men and conventional jobs who has started to work as a prostitute, calls them to repair a sink, for Stefano it's love at first sight.
The lives of a young mother and her boyfriend are turned upside down when she unknowingly becomes the focus of the attentions of a depressed and mentally unstable young man.
Taking more inspiration from The Faces of Death than from the "real" movie world, this documentary shows brutal violence, sex, nudes, some curiosities from various countries. Specifically: we observe porn-taxis, gay-pride, erotic patisserie, child prostitution, children forced to crush coca leaves (this causes them horrible wounds on the skin), human skin trade, sick children (very strong scene). According to the tradition of the movie world, even animals are not spared, even if the cruelties against them are limited to two scenes: the extraction of the heart of a monkey while it is still alive, and the operation on the testicles of a other monkey for testosterone.
That mondo packs in quite a lot: bodybuilders, seaweed massages, dancing, ear cleaning, japanese tattoo parlors, karate training, well jumping, ethnic strange rituals, cow dung harvesting, sex workers, snake handlers, bullfight and consumption, oral reindeer castration, animals eating, ethnic dancing, pride parades, sick patients, the streets of India: homeless people/funeral pyres/cripples, copen heart surgery, crippled kids in poor situations.
